It’s here! Today is the day! I can finally spill the beans about one of the biggest projects in our renovation thus far– our back deck makeover.
I mentioned a while back that the Home Depot asked me to be a part of their Patio Style Challenge. They provide a patio set, and I makeover the space. And I had plenty to work with. Shall we take a brief walk down memory lane, just for old times’ sake?
Yowza, it needed some love. And it got plenty of it. Here is the newly made over deck video reveal (watch for the cute close up of Rubes at the end. Wait for it, wait for it…). Thanks to James, per usual, for his talents with the camera!
Nearly everything you see was a DIY and I’m so excited to share a slew of tutorials with you starting today. I’m sharing how to make my DIY Cement Planters over on Home Depot’s blog, The Apron, today and you guys, this is one of my favorite simple projects ever. So easy, inexpensive, and fun. And how great would they be as Mother’s Day gifts? Hop on over and check them out. Video tutorial, naturally.
Also coming up, all of the details and instructions for how we stained our deck, built the pergola from scratch, made curtain rods and drapes from unconventional materials, the mood lighting, the DIY hanging planter, the vintage bar cart, the wicker char and accent table, and tomorrow, I’m sharing all of the styling details as well as giving away one of the items I have in my space. It’s a goodie! You don’t want to miss it!
Thank you so much to Home Depot for including me in such an outstanding group of talented bloggers. I have loved seeing each one of their space makeovers– you can see them on The Apron. Endless inspiration, I tell ya.
Here are a few more photos from the space:
Phew! Feels so good to have it done, documented, and finally be sharing it all with you! Now, BBQ’s all summer at my place! And don’t forget to check back tomorrow for the giveaway. Until then, you can find me on the deck….

Thanks Linda!! I’ll get right on it, after I finish my to do list! On second thought, you may be waiting awhile…. 🙂
Beautiful job! I can’t wait to make those shelf planters for my deck. Very inspiring!
Thank you so much, Krissy! Tutorial coming soon!
I’m in love! You are so talented.
Aw thanks Niki!
Looks great! Love the lights and that hanging herb garden! Can’t wait for your tutorials!
Thank you so much, Andrea! It’s coming up soon!
NONE of this will last through a Utah wind storm, or any storm for that matter. Good luck, it is very pretty now, but you’ll be hauling all of that indoors soon. Be prepared for desolation (I’m looking at you hanging lanterns and hanging potted plants).
Hi there, we had a pretty wicker storm this week and it all held up beautifully, including the hanging planter, lights, drapes, and lanterns. We took the glass and candles out of the lanterns, and even without a storm we keep the pillows and cushions indoors unless we are using them so they don’t get dirty. No desolation here, just a gorgeous space we are loving!
SOOO Beautiful!!! I am excited for all the details!
Thank you so much, Melissa!
My mouth dropped at the beauty you created.. this is totally wonderful. I love the selections of colors and fabrics you chose.
Thank you so much, Jamala! xx
SO beautiful!! Love how it turned out! We are just starting to rip out our old patio and doing all new! Do you do consults or help pick out all the goods?

Oh, wow. Looks like they moved the stair case to the other side. I remember when it was on the west side of the deck.
Hi KM, not sure what you mean, but we didn’t move the staircase.
It must have been moved when they finished the basement and added the basement doors.
Jen, your project turned out beautiful. I’m dying to know what you used for the lights, what is that wire? How do you install the lights and the wire.? I have some sting outdoor lights and a vinyl pergola and would like to install my string lights but don’t know where to start or what to use , I think that sturdy wire you have on yours would work for mine, but how do I do it?
Thank you so much, Patricia! I’ve got a full tutorial coming up on the lighting! Watch for it soon!
