Oak Wood Fire Kitchen Design

November 29, 2022

If you’re a Utah local, you may have visited Oak Wood Fire Kitchen (and if you haven’t, you should!!). It’s a Draper restaurant that makes the most amazing pizzas and American food with one of my favorite appetizers of all time: baked goat cheese. I’m drooling just thinking about it!

The owner and concept master behind Oak, Michael McHenry, reached out to our team to take the restaurant design to the next level. He wanted it to feel elevated yet have a comfortable, neighborhood feel. I’m obsessed with what we designed, and it’s been fun to see changes taking shape at Oak!

Today I’m sharing the design direction, our concept, and how we designed the space layout. I’m excited to photograph and share the finished space once all of the upgrades are complete! For now, let’s show you the new and improved Oak!

It was a fun challenge to take an existing restaurant and rethink it. We wanted Oak to feel warm yet modern, old and new at the same time. Comforting, like somewhere that has always been a part of the community, yet fresh and new. We knew richness and layers were going to help get us where we wanted the design to go.

Moody colors, millwork, leather, and modern bistro lighting were all carefully selected choices.

Here is a look at a few of our selections, and the millwork drawings for the main dining room.

We wanted the small lobby to feel like a spot you could comfortably wait for a table, chat with friends, and have a drink. It has a sort of relaxed family room feel.

Shop the Space

When we were working through the layout, Michael mentioned the idea of a Chef’s Table, and we ran with it! We designed a corner with a large round table, not far from the wood burning kitchen, where the Chef could host VIP guests and there could be an interaction in real time between the kitchen staff and the dining guests.

Here’s a peek at what Oak looked like before our design, and construction and upgrades are well underway! If you stop in, tag us on instagram! We’d love to hear what you think of the changes!

The bathrooms needed an upgrade as well, and I thought it would be fun to share some of the concept and design. Michael wanted to keep these spaces lower budget, and I think we found some fun upgrades!
