Mounting Individual Antlers

December 1, 2016

I’ve long had a pair of natural shed antlers I picked up at a thrift store several years ago.  I’ve used them in all sorts of places– on bookshelves, as centerpieces, on my fireplace, coffee tables, you name it.  But now they have a new home: mounted above our bed in our master bedroom.  Today I’ll show you how simple mounting individual antlers can be.

We put some thin moulding around our bed and nightstands, so it didn’t really leave much room for artwork.  It looked a bit too plain above our DIY headboard and I had the idea of mounting some antlers.  But rather than buy a new set or look for something already mounted on a plaque or something, I thought let’s try to mount the pair we already have.  I’m happy to report this is one project that worked out exactly as I envisioned it in my head.

I headed to the hardware store and to one of my favorite underrated isles for DIY decor projects: the plumbing isle.  Plumbing hardware comes in all kinds of pretty materials: copper and brass and gold and black.  I found these copper tube straps at Home Depot and thought they may just be the perfect size to fit around the antlers and into the wall.

They were just a teensy bit too tight, but the metal was pretty moldable so we made it work by bending it around the antlers a little more, then drilling it into the wall.

Because they were a bit small, it was a tad tricky to drill them in.  I recommend having two people– one to hold the antlers, and one to do the drilling.  The most important part is to hold really still, and drill steadily into the wall.

I must admit, the first night they were up there I worried about them falling and stabbing me in my sleep, but they are in there pretty good!  I don’t think they’re going anywhere, and they look so pretty, don’t you think?

They look lovely. But a naive question: Is over the bed a really good place to have something pointy and sharp? Could be an accident waiting to happen. But I’m an old worry-wart…..
