LAUNDRY ROOM MINI MAKEOVER

June 30, 2014

First, hello to those of you who are new around these parts!  I’m so happy you are here.  Stay a while, explore, and let me know if you have any questions.  I would love to hear from you!  Now, on to today’s post: my laundry room mini makeover.

There are some rooms you really go for it.  You gut the place, put it all back together, and it’s a completely new room.  Then there are rooms that just need a little Botox.  They don’t need (or you can’t afford) a complete overhaul, so you have to find inexpensive and easy ways to spruce them up.  The latter is exactly what my laundry room got: a mini makeover.

The name of the game with this space was spend as little as possible yet make it feel fresh, new, and modern.  Tall order when I was dealing with this:

And drum roll please: here is the finished product:

As I mentioned before, those cabinets were just too darn practical to get rid of.  The extra storage space is heavenly.  The room was feeling closed in, so I instead tore out the useless cabinets above the washer and dryer.  They were so short, nothing really fit in there.

Next the paint color.  The floor was staying, so I added some contrast with Smokestack Gray by Benjamin Moore.  It’s a pretty dark green/blue/gray.

The new shelves are from Ikea.  I wanted open shelving and these babies were perfect.  I also found these handy drying racks at Ikea.  Such space savers.

Rather than rest the ironing board against the wall, I thought it would be nice to hang it over the electrical box.  It got it out of the way and disguised a less than desirable feature– a metal box.

The sink got a good scrub and a new faucet.  Wish I could have replaced the whole thing, but it just wasn’t in the budget.

The cabinets got new hardware and it’s amazing how much newer they look and feel.  The hardware is from Home Depot.

You may recognize the bench, all made over.  The room also got a roman shade (more on that later).

Total for the room was around $500.  Not too shabby.  What do you think?

I’m gearing up for a crazy busy week ahead.  I keep waiting for things to slow down this summer but so far they are full steam ahead!

And lastly, today is my Jon’s birthday.  Boy, I’m so glad he was born.

Have a wonderful week!

I love it, Jen! You’re a hero for remodeling so much of your house at once! I love the hanging racks! I think I’ll head to Ikea and copy your idea. Love ya!

  4. RJ says:

Looks good! But, the long wall of white cabinets seem to dominate the room. I noticed the striped iron board cover and striped carpet – have you thought about painting similar large horizontal stripes across the wall cabinets? Give the cabinets a more architectural vibe? Just a thought….
