vintage mid-century dinette table

July 22, 2014

I’m getting close to showing the entire kitchen (tomorrow is the big day!) and today I wanted to share my current dining table.

I found this vintage mid-century dinette table around the holidays at a local thrift store.  I was walking through the store to the back furniture section when it’s as if a choir of hallelujah singing Christmas angels parted the sea of shoppers and shone a light right onto this table.  I practically ran over once I spotted the legs: brushed gold in near perfect condition.  The gold design detail on the top sealed the deal.  This baby was coming home with me.  And for a mere $25.  I gleefully skipped to the register, but not before warding off three other sharky shoppers eyeing the same table.

Jon went with me later that night to pick it up and was like “I hate the table.  It looks like it came from my grandmother’s house.”  It very well could have, but that’s awesome, imo.  Home it came and straight into the garage it went.  It took me selling our old table and chairs for Jon to finally agree to move the table indoors and now, folks, he actually likes it.  Not love, but like.  I, on the other hand, L.O.V.E. it.

I moved the painted vinyl chairs out of my room and set them up as captain’s chairs.  They clean up so nicely with just a damp cloth or wet wipe.  The other four chairs have their own post coming later this week.  I’m not totally in love with the chair situation, but it’s getting the job done for now.

What do you think?  Are you as obsessed with retro dinette tables as I am?  Something about them feels nostalgic and current all at the same time.

Whole room reveal coming tomorrow!

  1. It’s all in the pairings, I think. If you’d paired the table with pea-green vinyl chairs it would look straight out of an outdated 50’s house. But with your chairs it looks totally current. LOVE those gold legs!

  2. I love that table! It is pretty perfect and hello! gold legs!!! xo Kristin

I LOVE your table! I had a similar experience of finding a lovely chocolate brown leather recliner in a consignment store in Holladay, the one near The Store. My daughter was buying a black leather sectional for less than $900. and while waiting for her, I sat into the recliner and almost feel asleep immediately. Of course I bought it and brought it home and my hubby “hated it” as well but once he became enveloped in its magic, he fell asleep! No need for sleeping pills in our home! Just go sit in the recliner and stare out the window picture view for a minute and zzzs will surely follow!

I especially love the gold design on top of your table, matching the gold legs which look perfect, no dings or chips. I want to ask you about the caning back on your chairs. I had a cane seat situation, rips every time a man sits down with a wallet in pocket. It is very difficult to find a caning expert to repair those rips don’t you agree? Back East, I “knew a guy” who could repair caning, who worked at the antique store I frequented. What do you suggest about a caning repair?

I LOVE your blog BTW! 🙂

Thanks Crystal! I’ve never had good luck with cane repair. An option would be to replace the cane with an upholstered fabric seat. I’ve don’t that before and it looks great! Best of luck and thanks for reading!

  4. Looove the legs. Dont you just love when that IT thing is discovered and you know right away you have to have it! Cant wait to see the entire space:)
