She was always the cool one. My big sister with the the latest styles, the hippest music, and I wanted to be just like her. And she was totally annoyed to have me as her shadow.
As annoying as I was, she (mostly) tolerated me, and usually took on a motherly role. Our childhood situation wasn’t always the easiest and Wendy made sure I had money for snacks at the pool. She brought me good luck gifts to dance competitions. And she exposed me to all the wonderful that is the Nordstrom sale.
We would have “sleepovers” in her room and sing the Beach Boys and John Denver till we fell asleep. Our backyard became our wonderland and we invented the game “Gatekeeper” to keep out all the bad guys. As we grew and Wendy went on to college and then got married, she would mail me letters to tell me how much she missed living across the hall from me. And when I went away to school, moved across the country multiple times to follow my dreams, she always came to visit.
She is the only one who truly “gets” it. She continues to support me in all of my ambitions and dreams. She loves my baby girl. And her wicked sense of humor keeps me on my toes. I can count on her for brutal honesty and a kick in the pants. And I can also rely on her when I need her most to come through.
Not much has changed through the years. I still look up to her and she still invites me to her “cool kid” get togethers. I continue to want to be like my big sister.
I am so blessed fate brought us together, my sister by heart. I love you Wendy-Pooh and I can’t imagine my life without you.
