IKEA is the bomb when it comes to frames. They are clean, simple, and cheap. But those mats– ahhhhh those mats! The off-white mat to the white frame drives me a little bonkers. I typically spray paint them white, but I wanted to do something different after I got these amazing prints from Skoope Home in the mail.
I knew they would be perfect in Ruby’s playroom. There is a lonely wall next to her teepee where a single framed colorful map hangs, but I have been wanting to add to it and make it more of a gallery wall. The Skoope Home prints are black and white, so to add a pop of color (and switch up the off-white mat), I decided to paint the mats some coordinating colors from the room. Here is how I did it:
Painting frame mats is a really easy and inexpensive way to add some color to your wall, without overdoing it.
I pulled out my collection of my beloved Martha Stewart all-purpose craft paints (I buy them at Michael’s) and selected three colors that went well with the colors in the playroom, and didn’t clash with the map.
I popped out the mats, laid them out on a paper bag, and used a large soft bristle brush to paint on two coats, letting each coat dry in-between.
When they were all dry, I put the frames back together with the new pretty prints inside and voila! Color exactly where I wanted it. I combined the map print with the newly framed and color matted art, and an “R” I had purchased a while back for Ruby’s nursery, but it just didn’t fit right. I couldn’t love those prints more.
Shae from Skoope Home is one of my favorite up and coming artists. I can think of one billion places to put each and every one of her prints. And she is just as nice as can be. Love nice talented people!
And good news, peeps. Shae is giving away that beautiful collection of prints I chose for Ruby’s playroom to one lucky withHEART reader!

I love that ‘hustin’ print…that is something I literally said at work recently, so it would go so well at my desk!
Thanks for the tip! When you’ve spray painted them, did you use a special spray paint or just any one of the options you can pick up at Home Depot?
Thanks Dave! I used liquid craft paint from a craft store rather than spray paint for the mats.
