This weekend we made some great progress and I’m excited to share some of it with you, starting with a major addition to our bedroom: a new mattress.
We bought our old mattress about 6 years ago and it was expensive. It’s pillow-top, and was so so comfortable that we just sunk into it. Problem is, we just kept on sinking and we were left with body scoops in each of our sides of the bed. I don’t know if the photos can do it justice but there are clear body divots.
We knew it was bad but we didn’t want to spend a fortune on a new mattress just to have it happen again a few years later so we just kept putting it off. Then a company called Tuft and Needle reached out to me to see if I was interested in reviewing a new mattress. I didn’t know anything about them, but I thought hey, what have I got to lose? I signed on and anxiously awaited the new mattress’s arrival. And then it arrived….
In a box. Have you ever heard of a mattress arriving in a box? Not at all what we were expecting and Jon was immediately like “what’s in there, an air mattress? This is not going to go well.” We were worried.
And then we opened said box and continued to be worried when we saw it was packaged like a fruit roll-up.
And then, as if the Tuft and Needle people knew we were starting to worry, they told us “hey, don’t!” with a helpful card.
Phew! Still skeptical, we decided to slide the tootsie roll mattress toward the bed. Ruby rode ’em cowboy.
We cut away the packaging and before our very eyes, the mattress started to puff up. And puff up. And puff up some more. It was magic!
We put it into place and let it do its thing for 2-3 hours, as suggested and tada! It was a brand new, amazingly soft and comfortable king sized mattress! Ruby couldn’t wait to show her enthusiasm and give it a trial run.
She was in love and after our first night’s sleep, we were too. You guys, I’m amazed but it’s the perfect combination of soft and firm. We are both sleeping great. And the trippy packaging? Well, Tuft and Needle specializes in urban shipping, hence why it was so compactly packaged. Brilliantly weird. Here she is all dressed up.
I was impressed by their price points as well. We got the 10 inch thick king which retails for $600. So reasonable.
Now, here’s hoping it cures some of my back woes that I’m sure were made worse by my sinking old mattress.
*Our mattress was c/o Tuft and Needle, but I received no additional compensation for this review
I think I would’ve freaked out too seeing my mattress fruit roll up style! But as long as it’s comfortable, it could come in one of those little capsules that you add water and voila…a toy dinosaur. Can you imagine if you could do that with a mattress? 🙂
Exactly! Hilarious!
I’m very intrigued! Do you know anything about the manufacturing of where the mattress is made? thanks!
Hi Jenn! They are made in the USA, in the Carolinas and Southern California. Thanks for reading!
I will be interested in a follow up review over the next few years. Awesome if it withstands the test of time! We have the exact same matress you replaced. Ours carries the same wavy pockets and envelopes us when we sleep at night. We have even had RC Willey come out and measure with the warranty but it did not merrit a replacement. Lesson learned from the high end matresses. $$ does not always = quality. Keep us posted!
Me too, Michelle! We’ll see how it wears with time! Thanks for reading!
Wow, really different, but it look fabulous and such a great price.
Fascinating! I too will be interested to see how well it ‘wears’. This might be a bit on the personal side, but did you rotate your old mattress regularly? It looks like the ‘foot’ of the bed was in better condition than the ‘head’. I’m curious because I’m trying to extend the life of my similar mattress by rotating it regularly, but I imagine that even so the ‘dents’ will not recover quickly, and will reoccur soon after a rotation over the long term. I just don’t know what the ‘long term’ is.
Hi Ruth, thanks for reading! We did rotate regularly, but it didn’t really help much. It’s frustrating, isn’t it? Mattresses are so expensive! This one has great reviews online so I’m hopeful! So far, it’s been great!
Hi! As you know, we are in the market for a new mattress. I would love to check this one out. Do you know if they are sold at any stores locally or only available online? Thanks!
Hi Holly! They are only available online, on their website and also on Amazon.
Did this mattress completely take the place of your old mattress ? Or did it just go on top of the old mattress? I gotta check this out.
Hi Sheri, we kept our old box spring and just replaced the mattress on top. Our old mattress is currently in the garage until we can figure out what to do with it!
My son’s mattress came like that. It was from Walmart, so not high end at all, but I was still like, What?! Fluffed up and is actually a comfy mattress…I was worried with it being from Walmart. Anyways, I’d love to see an update on how this one holds up. We need a new mattress pretty soon, and their prices seem reasonable.
Great for small spaces like stairways and elevators too! So much easier than carrying a big mattress up stairs. We have a third floor to our house with 5 bedrooms that we don’t use cause it’s an old house and we don’t know how to get a mattress up the stairs, around the corner and in a room. This could work!
We just bought one of these – also the 10 King. I had been warned that it was a very firm mattress, and that is taking some getting used to, but overall I do feel like it’s been much better on my lower back and sore pressure points on my hip than our old, expensive pillow top.
I love their return policy too – you can give it a test run for 30 days and if you don’t like it, they’ll arrange for the “like-new” mattress to be donated to an area charity. Your donation receipt letter is all they need to process your full refund.
Here’s a code for $50 off (and I get $50 off, full disclosure) – https://www.tuftandneedle.com/r/cXRBxl1B
If you buy one – post your gift code so the savings can be paid forward to you and someone else.
I’m overwhelming impressed with their customer service – and hope the mattress proves to be better than previous ones we’ve had in the long term.
We switched to memory foam about three years ago and have never looked back! I had back surgery in my twenties and always had a difficult time finding a comfortable bed! When I slept on the innerspring mattress in our travel trailer I could barely move the next morning, so we bought one for it as well!
Love this mattress! And it’s the best deal around. Trying it is essentially risk free because of the company’s 30 return policy, no strings attached. Here’s $50 off your new tuft and needle mattress!

As I was reading your post, your mattress sounded like mine. It arrived in a giant box. There was second box for the metal bed frame. The mattress was shrink-wrapped in a heavy plastic and it took 24 hours to inflate. I just felt bad for the FedEx (or UPS) fellow who delivered it up to the 3rd floor (no elevator). I was excited because it was my husband’s and my first king and new mattress together. We were sleeping on a full for one year. So a king is a big size jump. We got it 4 years ago. And it’s still comfortable and soft. We rotate it twice a year. It’s my favorite bed. I love getting back to it when we return from vacation. It’s still available at Sam’s Club. The price was around $700 with free shipping back then. It’s $550 now plus shipping. http://www.samsclub.com/sams/night-therapy-13-euro-top-spring-mattress-and-bed-frame-set-king/prod910334.ip?sprodId=prod910334
Love it Jen. We splurged on a new mattresss a couple months ago after sleeping very badly for years. We ended up choosing a Sterns and Foster and its been heaven. Its a hybrid between memory foam and pillowtop and it just works. Love that yours came in easy shipping. Heres to sleeping beautifully.
How are these foam mattresses performing in the heat retention area? Most of the foam mattresses I’ve tried develop a heat well during the night.
It seems to be holding up well!
