Living Room Design Plans

December 17, 2014

The gorgeous fireplace surround in this room was all Tom Cruise on me and had me at hello.  The moment spotted it when we were walking through the house, I knew I would do whatever I could to keep it in tact.  It’s solid stone, has intricate detailing, and is in perfect condition.  Luckily Jon agreed the fireplace was a keeper and so, stay it will.

Pretty much everything else in this room goes, though.  The beige-ish/mauve-ish/pink-ish carpeting (what color is that exactly?), the thin baseboards, the over-the-top window treatments, and even a portion of the wall near the entrance just to open it all up and make it feel more a part of the rest of the house.  Right now it just feels like a vast living room separated from everything else.  And with the best view in the house, we want it to feel inviting, like Tom Cruise himself asking us to jump on the couch with him and Oprah.  Or maybe just sit down and enjoy a lovely hot cocoa whilst enjoying a nice, toasty fire in the awesome fireplace.  But I digress….

When I was searching for inspiration photos for the direction I wanted to move in for this space, I found this space by Emily Henderson and the detailing of the fireplace is similar, don’t you think?

I’m definitely digging all of the white, but our space won’t work for built-ins on either side.  I like the idea of doing some kind of shelving, but nothing firm yet.

I also love this image from Lisa Petrole.  We will have black windows and the tone in this room feels just right.

We’re planning on hardwoods throughout the main floor, except for the bedrooms, so this room will feel a lot more refined.  Also, debating on putting in a main ceiling light fixture in addition to more cans.  This house is very much lacking in lighting.  In fact, the master bedroom doesn’t have a single light fixture.  The previous owners used lamps only.  More on that later.

I normally gravitate toward pops of color, but this room is feeling very calming, serene, and neutral to me with a lot of white and mixed textures.  You feel me?

And I can’t help myself from already wishing we were living in this home for the holidays.  Something about decorating a rental just isn’t the same as decorating your own home.  I’m grateful we can turn this new/old house into that home and I’m plotting next year’s holiday gatherings.

Happy Thursday, dear friends.

I find it interesting that the fireplace appears to “float” on the wall!

I love your new fireplace. I know it will be a wonderful room when you’re finished. You must be very excited to get started.
The last image speaks to me too. I love everything about it, from the dark hardwood to the light furniture. Love, love, love those windows! It is a serene space. I’m crushing over hides at this moment, also. My husband, not so much. We’ll see……
    I’m excited for you, Jen!
