Family Room Details

My goodness, thank you for all of your kind responses about the family room yesterday here and on social media! I’m always so humbled by the kindness of readers/viewers and feel so lucky to get to share my crazy ideas with all of you.
Today I wanted to talk a few family room details and talk through the thought process behind the room. We pretty much started from scratch in this room, with the exception of a few pieces I wanted to carry over. The Pottery Barn ottoman and wood side table were two of those. They were high quality and investments when we had purchased them several years before, so I wasn’t ready to part with them yet.
We needed new couches desperately, and knew a sectional was our choice. This is a room we relax, spend a lot of time, and wanted to feel comfortable. It’s also an area that gets a lot of use, so a dark color was a smart choice. I found the Tate Sectional from Z Gallerie and for the price point, it was perfect.
With three of the main pieces in place, I knew we had one more big decision for furniture– we needed another seating option. I had found some old wingback chairs a while back and wasn’t quite sure what to do with them. After finding some pretty peacock blue velvet, it was settled– I knew the chairs were meant to be blue velvet. I wasn’t sure they were going to work in the space but after getting them back from the upholsterer, I put them in the family room just to feel it out and there they have stayed. They were a fun pop of color in an otherwise neutral space.
From there, I needed to select fabrics for pillows. I wanted something that tied in the blue, coordinated with the dark gray sectional well, and that added some color to contrast. This is a fun family space, so I felt good about bright colors. I have always loved Chiang Mai Dragon in Alabaster and have always wanted to use it in a room, and it worked so great in this space. I wanted some more coral to balance out the dark blue chairs and had been hanging onto some vintage coral fabric I picked up at an estate sale. I paired them both with Caitlin Wilson’s Navy Souk (not currently available).
Up next: a rug selection. I wanted something with a gray base, but also light. For the price point, the clear winner was the Moroccan Trellis rug in Lt. Grey from Rugs USA.
Other items: two X-Benches from Target (love this option as well!), a simple inexpensive accent table (similar option and on sale), also from Target, a large mirror from Z Gallerie, and not pictured this awesome pouf (we have the navy striped one). Ruby loooooooves it. It’s on sale right now and I feel like I should buy them for every room in my house.
The lamps are from the Nate Berkus Target line and Ikea, and accessories are a variety from Target, West Elm, Homegoods, and vintage/thrifted finds.
The drapes are simple white panels from Ikea and the hardware is from Target. Also, the cabinet hardware ring pulls are from Home Depot.
