I’m not typically someone who out-of-the-blue-awesomeness happens to. I don’t win giveaways or lotteries or even bingo (though that says much more about my poor bingo skills than my luck). So when an editor from Better Homes and Gardens (yep, that one!) emailed me a little while ago with news of some such awesomeness, it pretty much made my month.
A sweet withHEART reader (I could kiss you, whoever you are!) nominated me for the Better Homes and Gardens Blogger Awards and the editors picked my little ‘ol blog as one of the 5 finalists in the DIY category (wha?!?)! You guys, there are a million amazing/inspiring/all-around-spectacular DIYers out there, with equally as amazing/inspiring/all-around-spectacular blogs. Heaven knows I find a lot of inspiration from many of them. What a neat thing to be chosen. I’m seriously so humbled, mostly by the fact that there is a reader who not only has learned from the projects I do, but also that they actually took the time to nominate me. My, that is special indeed.
Now, I have no expectation of actually winning. Though it would be amazing (the winner will receive a mention in Better Homes and Gardens Magazine and $200. Hello, my dream!), the competition is fierce. It’s a talented bunch indeed. Check out my face doing the Brady Bunch intro next to none other than the fresh faced Young House Love. Oh you know, they’re bff with Oprah. NBD.
I’ve never really been good at, shall we say, self promotion, but if you’re near a computer or phone or device, and you want to vote for me, I will give you an air-through-the-web kiss right this minute. In fact, you can vote once an hour, every hour, from today until March 5th. And if you wanted to tell your friends, family, social media followers, strangers on the street, well, I would be blowing a whole lot of air kisses in your direction. It really means so much to me that anyone finds what I do and create even a little bit inspiring. Thank you to all of you, so very much, and thank you BHG!
If you would like to vote for me, here is how you do it:

*You can vote once an hour, as many times as you like, from today until March 5th. Winners will be announced the next day.
The amazing James helped me put a little video together to explain a bit more the sentiment behind withHEART. Thanks James!
I’m bad! More like I’m an idiot:)
That was shot in my family room– that is almost done! Hoorah! Can’t wait to share more soon.
In other fun news, the HOME TOUR tab at the top of the blog has been revamped. You can now easily look through finished rooms with before and after photos, watch accompanying videos, and click on the DIY posts for each part of the room. There is also now a button on the sidebar. Love a nice organizational refresh! It feels like I just cleaned out my linen closet!
Again, thank you for following withHEART. I love reading your comments, getting your emails, answering your questions, and connecting with you online. It’s a whole world I never expected to be a part of, and I’m so grateful I am.
So incredibly happy for you, Jenn! The nomination is well deserved! I love your blog and the sentiment behind it. By the way, you were born to be in front of the camera!
You just made my day, Sita! Thank you!
Jen, the best of luck to you!!! You deserve all the recognition that is coming your way. You are so inventive and I like the way you always give all your DIY details so clearly. You have so many good ideas and they just keep coming. Most of all, I like the way you write. I know you are a journalist/anchor and that background makes you very strong at giving a story life. Your DIY is great but it’s only the tip of your iceberg. I’ve been reading your blog for almost a year and you are, by far, my favorite of all the blogs I read. You authenticity and sincerity are like the watermark behind every story that you share. That’s who you really are!!
Oh my goodness, June that was one of the nicest compliments I’ve ever received! How sweet of you! Thank you for reading! xx
I actually just found you from your nomination and I must say? I wish if found your blog earlier! I love you already. Congratulations! 🙂
Side note: that chair you are sitting on in your video, I have two very similar chairs I am planning on reupholstering in a navy fabric! So strange to see it somewhere! What does the rest of the back look like? Do the… Lines?? Go straight down all the way? Mine split in the middle with a button tuft (like this, turned around: =>•<=).
Love your blog already! Looking forward to catching up and getting to "know you" better.
Thank you so much, Chelsea! And welcome! I’m so glad you found me! The chairs were recently refinished and I’m posting about them next week– check back! The pleat does go all the way down to the cushion. Love a navy chair! I’m sure yours will turn out great. xx
Congrats Jen! So very well deserved. I’m so happy for you:) I was one of the people who nominated you and I am so happy to see you make it into the top 5!!
Shavonda, are you kidding?!? How sweet of you! Thank you so much! How unexpected– you are the best! xx
Oh and I loooved your video. Funny story, I just had a super awkward interview on the local news a couple days ago and the anchor asked me what my design philosophy is when it comes to houses and I said pretty much exactly as you said: that when you walk into a home it should reflect those whom live there. You should instantly get a feel of the homeowners personalities. We are all different and our homes should not look like everyone else’s:)
[…] you so much for your sweet response here, on instagram, and through email/facebook/twitter about yesterday’s news. It really means so much. Voting continues through March 5th, so I’ll mention it from […]
You ROCK!! I love your blog. I went to vote but you have to be on facebook…..which I am not!! So sad, cause I would totally have cast my vote for you. Good luck and I hope you are a lucky WINNER!!
You’re so sweet, thank you Megan! My dear dad had to sign up for Facebook to vote for me– ha!
