SICK DAY

It’s past midnight now; at this moment when I’m finally able to write. A little girl as hot as an oven is curled up at my side, sleeping at last. She is sure to wake in an hour or so, when her medicine wears off, and I know I’m in for likely another sleepless night. We have a sickie over here.
It’s amazing how one minute kids can be fine then BAM! An illness hits them from out of nowhere and they are out of commission. Ruby came down with a scary high fever and has wanted to do little of her normal activities. Instead she has decided she wants only for me to hold her. All. The. Time. It’s so sad. She won’t let me out of her sight and the moment I try to set her down– even when she is dead asleep– she immediately starts crying. She just wants to hug.
That means pretty much everything else has taken a back seat. I’m behind on emails and blogging and most everything life related. But even as I realize my to-do list is growing at super speed, I feel only gratitude. I am so grateful I am here to make her feel better. To care for her needs, to give her medicine, stroke her hair, check her temperature and scour my cupboards looking for anything she will eat. And for my service, I am constantly rewarded with spontaneous kisses, laid on me by two little hands smooshing my face up to hers, then her arms wrap around my neck and her head takes its place on my shoulder. It is pretty much my favorite thing ever on the planet.
I’ll be back in business on here tomorrow with a post about something that has become a big part of my training lately– water running. But today, I’m taking a sick day. Sorry anyone who has written me an email. Your reply is coming! It’s just tricky to write back with a toddler in my arms.
Here’s hoping this nasty ailment takes a hike soon so my girl can get back to her energetic 1 1/2 year old self. Sick kids are the worst.
