Vintage Inspired Candy Wreath

December 2, 2015

It’s just not the holidays without some crafting, am I right?  Today I’m sharing how to make a vintage inspired candy wreath.

This year we have a considerable amount more space than last year in the rental during remodeling, and Ruby is really getting into the holiday spirit so I wanted to start the tradition this year of putting some decorations up in the playroom, just for the girls.  Oriental Trading reached out to collaborate on a wreath project, so it was the perfect start to holiday decorating.

They sent me a ginormous box of holiday crafting supplies.  I laid it all out and I’m not exaggerating when I say I could have made 10 wreaths out of it all.

Ruby walked over in the middle of the package-opening and she immediately was drawn to the pink poms and shiny bells.  That got my wheels turning and I decided to make a vintage inspired wreath with some candy just to make it extra whimsical and sweet (see what I did there?).

I started by separating all of the supplies into color.  It was making my brain hurt trying to sort everything out when it was a big jumbled holiday explosion.  Once things were organized, I was able to see which colors played well off of each other.

While I was at the grocery store, I found some cheap vintage-y feeling ornaments in the dollar section that were exactly the colors I knew Ruby would love.

I started by wrapping the foam wreath in white felt ribbon.  I secured it using hot glue.  Hint: it always takes a lot more ribbon than you think it will, so be sure to have plenty on hand.

Next I started gluing a few of the larger poms in place in the area I wanted to make my focal point.  I started with the larger ornaments and items first, them placed the little poms and bells to fill in the gaps.

The suckers I really think add that extra unexpected touch.  Also, bonus that Oriental Trading has so many colors and styles.  The long ones reminded us of unicorn horns, which ironically (or not) that’s what they’re called– unicorn twists.  I placed glue all over the stick, then slid it under other items to secure it into place.

The pink tree was an old ornament I had that had a broken string, so I thought why not include it rather than toss it?  I bent the bottom just slightly, stuck some glue on the tip, then tucked it under the ribbon to hold it in place.

I think sometimes with things like wreaths, it’s better to just go with what feels right rather than try to plan out where every little thing will go ahead of time.  Once it felt right, I put a little ribbon bow at the top, added a bell, and we were ready to hang it!

For this project I used:

A foam wreath

pom poms in assorted colors and sizes

jingle bells

round suckers

unicorn twist suckers

cheap ornaments (grocery store)

felt ribbon (from my ribbon stash)

hot glue

I actually have plans to make another wreath with a slightly different theme from all of this stuff.  I’ll share it soon!

If you have any holiday crafting or entertaining plans, I suggest you check out Oriental Trading’s website.  You could get lost in there and their prices are really low.

Happy Holiday crafting season!
