VINTAGE FABRIC RIBBON TRIM PILLOWS

February 18, 2014

Estate sales are weird.  Don’t get me wrong, you can find some amazing things at a good estate sale, but it’s always a bit bizarre/creepy/unnerving walking through someone’s home who has recently passed away, looking to buy some of their possessions.  I always feel a little like I’ve broken into someone’s house and they’re going to come around the corner at any moment and ask me why I’m looking at their china.

It was during one such estate sale a few months ago where I hit the jackpot.  It was a bit late in the day, and I only had a few moments, but it was near my house so I thought I would drop by.  I figured I wouldn’t find much, as the good stuff is usually gone in the first hour of a sale, but this house was a gem.  Midcentury, widowed woman who had lived there nearly her entire adult life.  No children, in fact the closest relative was a nephew, whom she left the house to.  Neighbors were putting on the sale, and everything was going for way less than they could have asked for.

The homeowner was a seamstress by profession, and she had room after room of fabric and patterns.  I was in such a rush, I grabbed the first few things that caught my eye: two GORGEOUS pieces of different colors of coral fabric.  One about 5 yards of a pinky coral, and the other more an orange hue and 8 yards.  They were going for– get this– $3 a piece.  WHAT.  I snatched both of them up, and let me tell you what, I have been kicking myself ever since for not taking more time to go through that treasure trove.

I also snatched up two mid-century gold-based office chairs (you guys, they are AMAZING.  I’ll post about them soon.), a piece of real coral (remember my tips for washing coral), and two gold frames.   The whole lot was less than $30.  For real.  I can’t stop thinking about everything I missed out on!

But enough about my regret, let’s get to what I did with the pinky coral fabric.  I give you my new family room ribbon trim pillows:

I’m so in love.  They are the perfect color and the fabric is so high quality.  I picked up the white grosgrain ribbon at the craft store, and paid my seamstress a bit extra to sew the trim.  Worth every penny, my friends.

That is a little sneak peak of the family room I’ve been working hard on for the past two weeks.  Tomorrow, you’ll get a better look.  And the other two pillows?  More on them in an upcoming post.

We’ve been painting our hearts out trying to get our kitchen cabinets painted so we can move on to the backsplash.  I promise an update post soon.

You guys, tomorrow I have a really amazing announcement on withHEART.  I still kind of can’t believe it.  Can’t wait to spill the beans!

So basically, just stay tuned for all things wonderful:)

Until then…

I have personally never been to an estate sale, but it remains one of my dreams to go to one! I agree, this was a great find. Beautiful pillow, well done.
