THE UPHOLSTERY SHOP: TIPS FROM A PRO (video)

January 8, 2014

Happy Wednesday!  I’m so darn excited for today’s video.  Like kid in a candy store excited.  It kicks off a series that I’ve been wanting to share for quite sometime– industry advice from a professional upholsterer.  It’s called The Upholstery Shop.

Ya’ll know I’m a big believer in reupholstery.  I am constantly on the lookout for vintage, antique, solid furniture that just needs a new outfit.  Not only can you find some real treasures, you can create one-of-a-kind, sentimental, heirloom pieces for much less than you could buy new (and much more special).

A great upholsterer is key.  Besides finding a great piece, it’s the most important component.  There are A) plenty of people out there who don’t do quality work and B) plenty of people who will charge you a fortune.  But Brian Maxfield is a gem.  A diamond in the rough world of upholstery.  He’s who I use for all of my work (most recently my thrift store daybed), and who I always recommend.

I asked him to share his wisdom with my readers, and I’m happy to announce he is going to be a frequent contributor here on withHEART.  Today kicks off his first feature:  Tips from a Pro.  You guys, this information is like gold.  It’s rare you find a professional willing to be candid and up front about how the process works, what to expect to pay, what pieces to look for, etc.  First, a little about Brian.

Brian is the owner of Rocky Mountain Upholstery, a family owned shop located in Sandy, Utah.  Brian’s father started the business, and he grew up learning the ropes from his dad.  Brian has worked in the business for 20 years.  His prices are the best around and his quality is top notch.  But before you hire an upholsterer, you need to know a few things.  Here are Brian’s top tips you should know:

Once a month, Brian is going to share his advice here.  Hoorah!  If you’re interested in having Brian refinish a piece for you, you can find his contact info located in the contributor section of withHEART.  Thank you Brian!  (and as always, thanks James for the beautiful photos and video!).

Brian has been working on a few pieces for me, including that mid-century sofa.  Can’t wait to share more when they are complete.

And I want to share the winner of the great La Design Giveaway. Congrats to Janel who said:

“Happy healthy 2014! What a cute giveaway! My New Years resolution is to print old and new photos to put into albums. I would love to print as I take photos and get more organized! Thanks for the chance! :)

Congrats, Janel!  Email me at jen(@)withheart.com to claim your prize.

Hope you are having a wonderful week,
