PHOTO TIP: THE RULE OF THIRDS

February 20, 2013

A quick way to make your pictures go from yawn to yowsers! (in a good way) is to use the rule of thirds.

Ever hear of it?  It’s one of the most basic compositional guidelines in photography, and one that every photographer should be familiar with and able to use.

Here is how it works.  It’s easy– trust me.

When taking a picture, imagine a grid of thirds in your viewfinder (like a game of tic-tac-toe).  Place your subject at one of the four intersecting points of your imaginary grid (the points of interest), instead of placing the subject in the middle of the frame.

Fun, right?

This technique creates a more asymmetrical composition i.e., one where the subject is not perfectly situated in the center of the frame and one that feels truer to every day life.

Obviously, this rule should not be used for every photograph and there are many photo opportunities where it is preferable to place the subject in the middle of the frame.  But give it a try, I think you’ll like what you see! Here are some examples…
