CHILDREN AND MEDIA SAFETY

January 24, 2014

Cheerful family watching TV.

Becoming a parent has changed the way I think about the media.  It has made me much more aware of what is on the television, music playing, and eventually, I will have to try to control what my precious little girl sees on the internet.  It’s daunting for a parent, isn’t it?  Children are so innocent and untainted by some of the bad the world has to offer.

So, where do you start?  How do you filter through all of the garbage out there yet still allow your kids a little freedom with media?  Is it possible to protect them and also allow them to watch television without you sitting next to them every minute, monitoring what they see?  Comcast has asked me to share a seminar they are offering for free to parents locally (in Utah, though they may offer the same program out of state/country.  Check with your local provider) to educate parents on appropriate programs, parental controls and safety settings for both television and internet.  There is no charge for the seminar, but they do ask you pre-register.  Dr. Michael Rich, a renowned pediatrician who specializes in media and child health, will be the keynote speaker.  Comcast director of product and operational compliance, Jim Janco, will also go through all of the safety features and options available for parents.  It’s really valuable information all the way around.  Below is the event information:

Registration will open prior to the seminar from 8:30 to 9 a.m. on Jan. 25 at the Utah Valley Convention Center, 220 W. Center Street Suite 200 in Provo.

 Schedule:

  • 8:30 to 9 a.m. – Registration
  • 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. – Keynote and Q-and-A: Dr. Michael Rich, Center on Media and Child Health
  • 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. – Panel discussion
  • Dr. Michael Rich, Center on Media and Child Health
  • Jim Janco, Comcast
  • Michele Bates, Daily Herald
  • 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. – Jim Janco, Comcast
  • 12:15 to 12:30 p.m. – Q-and-A with Jim Janco

You can find more information on the Comcast blog.

For now, I’m able to control Ruby’s media intake with little trouble, but eventually, I– like every parent– will have to look into my options.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!  I’m enjoying a much needed family vacation in Hawaii.  It is truly heaven here.  See you Monday!
