Playroom with a Side of Work

April 18, 2016

Hello from vacation!  If you follow me on instagram, you may have pieced together that we surprised Ruby with a birthday trip to Disneyland.  What a magical trip it has been!  Even though I’m on a break, I couldn’t miss out on today’s blog post for another round of BSHT put on by my friend, Lindsay.  This round’s topic is Work and Play.

Hola if you’re heading here from A Storied Home!  Such a beautiful, organic and earthy feeling site.

The office at the #staggreno is still very much a work in progress.  I finally nailed down the design, but it’s currently being used as a big (and messy) storage room while we put our actual storage room together.  It’s driving me ca-razy to not have a designated place to work, since I work from home mostly.  Finishing that room is next on the list, but until I get it done, I thought I would share a combination of our current playroom (where I occasionally work while the girls play), and our last office which I miss very much based almost completely on the fact that it was finished.  And organized.  And not a storage room as mine is now.  Arg.

But let’s start with the playroom, shall we?

You can read every little detail about this space HERE, but I’ll give you just a little refresher.

When we bought the house, this space was a dark and dreary formal dining room.  After raising the roof (literally), taking out the wallpaper, adding french doors, cutting a bigger window, and of course switching the light fixture, we had a blank slate to work with.  I designed the built-ins and Jon busted them out (I did little to help, as I was about 8 months pregnant with Anna) but he nailed it, as he always does, and they turned out beautifully.

That little window seat is where I end up working if I’m under the gun with a deadline, as I often am, and the girls are playing.  I’ve also sat at the little play table many a time with my laptop, typing away while Ruby cooks me up something yummy in the play kitchen,

I get asked most about the little fairy door.  Ruby’s love of fairies runs deep and I wanted to add a little magic into our new house when we moved in, so I found this little fairy door on Etsy and told her a fairy named Sparkle had moved in too.  Sparkle occasionally leaves Ruby little notes or presents.  I love when I catch her talking to Sparkle’s door telling her what a good girl she has been.  Childhood is the best.  (If you search “fairy door” on Etsy, a bunch of similar items come up)

Now a look at my past home’s office.  Please oh please let us finish my new office soon for my sanity’s sake.
