OUTDOOR LIGHTING

June 4, 2014

night 2 night 3 night 4

Lighting really sets the tone for a space.  For an outdoor room, like our back deck, I didn’t want the only light source to be the porch light, but instead wanted a soft, warm, inviting glow with a dreamy feel.  I used a combination of string lights and lanterns for the outdoor lighting.  It was simple once I came up with a plan.  Check it out (video/editing by James Young)

It makes the deck so dreamy, especially on these long summer nights.

Hope you’re all having a wonderful week!

    Hi Jen,
I LOVE LOVE LOVE everything about your deck! would you mind sharing the dimensions of your deck? It’s just lovely.

Thank you so much! I just found your blog and I love it! Thanks for sharing.

  3. […] We added an ambiance and mood lighting by hanging string lights. A cluster of hanging lanterns give the look and feel of a light fixture, and the nifty battery operated faux candles I found at The Home Depot make them practical, safe, and easy to turn on and off. I love your deck! We are in the process of renovating from a flood and will be building a new deck as part of that process. Can you tell me what items are in your deck photos that you bring in from the rain? Or even that you bring in on a regular basis and how well has everything held up? Thanks! I’m loving the inspiration!

Thank you so much, Ashley! We move the cushions and pillows indoors when we’re not using them. They are all outdoor fabrics so we could leave them outside, but we are a bit more conservative. We just don’t want them to get dirty! But, outdoor fabrics are made to hold up outside. Everything else stays out all the time.

Thank you for the quick reply. The lanterns stay out too? My mom has the same ones and I am pretty sure if I ask nicely they can come live at our house when we move back home. I love the idea of using them outside!

Hi Ashley, yes, the lanterns stay out. The only thing that happened with them is that there is a cork board type pad thing on the bottom (very technical description:) and after it rained a few times it fell out of all three. But, it actually looks better without it in, so it’s just fine! We never take them down.

I love the lanterns. Where dis you get your flameless candles and/or what brand do you recommend?

    Thanks!

  7. Carol says:

Are the lanterns all the same size? If not what sizes would you suggest?

    • Jen says:

Hello! I purchased three different sizes– a small, medium, and a large. They offered three different sizes so it worked out great! I hope that helps! Thanks for reading.

Love your deck. You did a great job. Where did the chain to hang the lanterns come from?

Where can I get the lanterns?

  10. […] every patio/deck/outdoor space has a place for them.  I loooooove string lights.  (Remember how we put them on our deck at our last home?  There’s a whole video tutorial!)  I’ve linked up a few of my favorite string light […]
