JEWELRY NOOK (and painting mirror frames)

December 10, 2013

We have a little nook in our master bedroom right when you walk in the door.  I wasn’t sure what to do with it for awhile, but didn’t have room for jewelry or a mirror in my closet, so I wanted to create a little space to keep all of my accessories organized.  I was pushing to get the room finished and didn’t really have time (or money) to seek out a lot of new items for the space, so I used mostly what I had with a few thrifted items and an inexpensive purchase.  Here’s what I came up with:

bedroom 7 bedroom 8 bedroom 9

The jewelry box was a gift from Jon a couple years ago, and it’s still a favorite.  Pottery Barn still carries it, and I love it so much.

The necklace tree is also from Pottery Barn.  the little black  and red round flower dish is a gift Jon brought back from a trip to Europe for me while we were dating.  The Mozart bust form was a thrift store find for $1.

The faux antlers are from Target.  I love them.  Go get some before they are sold out!  Photo of Rubes I took this summer in our backyard, frame is from Ikea.  The accent table is also from IKEA and I’ve had it for years, but I believe they still carry it.  Everything is pushed back on the table so much so little fingers can’t grab it all!  Ha!

Now to the mirror– the DIY in the space!

I found this mirror at a local thrift store for $5 a while back.  I liked the shape, and the frame was just a basic wood, which is easy to re-finish.  I wanted to add a pop of color to the nook, so I went with a bold poppy color.

I started by deglossing the frame with sander/deglosser, then giving it a light sanding with a fine grit.  After wiping it off with a clean cloth, I cleaned the mirror really well, then taped it off with some painter’s tape.

I decided to use Martha Stewart’s craft paint line for the paint, because I wanted to paint it inside during one of Ruby’s naps.  You can pick up the paint at really any craft store.  I bought it at Michael’s.

I laid out a tarp on my floor, and used a paper bowl to hold the paint squirt.  I used a quality paint brush with nice, smooth hair, since the paint wasn’t the highest quality.  I wanted to avoid as many brush strokes as possible.

I really like this paint line and use it quite a bit for projects, as the color variety is exceptional.  I love every shade and sheen and it adheres to all kinds of surfaces.  But a little word of warning:  Raw wood soaks it up, so it took three full coats to get the color to stand true.  I let it dry completely in-between coats.

The finished product is a statement without overdoing it.  It’s a cheerful little space where I can make sure I look alright, and find the right accessories before I head out the door.

I often find mirrors at thrift stores because there is always a great variety and they are so inexpensive.  (Remember this one?)  In fact the mirror I’m planning to use in Ruby’s bathroom above the vanity is also a thrift store find.  Hoping to have that room finished in the next week or so to show you.  It’s so sweet.

Hope you’re having a great week,

  1. Cute!! I love the color, and those antlers on the other wall! I did something similar with another funky vintage mirror in our office… http://www.adventuresindressmaking.com/2013/05/ugly-old-mirror-sanding-spray-paint-makeover.html#.UsMry_RDuSo. They lend themselves well!
